Substituting “caused by” for “due to” is a quick way to verify correct usage.
Correct usage:
My low grade was due to lack of study.
My low grade was caused by lack of study.
Incorrect usage:
I missed the class due to the rain.
I missed the class caused by the rain.
It should be corrected to:
I missed the class because of the rain.
I haven’t seen this particular misuse in published philosophical materials, probably because causal relations are dealt with in more precise expressions.
